While training in a class with Jake Shields, who was covering ashi garami attacks, Alvin and I played around a bit with different finishes and I came up with this. I like it because it really goes from 0 to 100 and puts you on the offensive quickly – changing from being on bottom to top with an aggressive guard pass. Even if the pass doesn’t finish, you are going to be on top and have a strong angle.

To become the best, we must continuously test ourselves. We measure our performance, evaluate our faults, accept criticism and then work on improving ourselves before starting all over again.
I live by this principle, and I need your help! I wish to be the best instructor I can be, but I need feedback from you to know if I am doing a good job. Why would you do that instead of going for the heel hook or even a half Boston crab?
